ELD Algebra (Syllabus) Teacher: Mrs. Ngocsuong Le
|
COURSE
OVERVIEW:
This
course is designed for ELL students. It gives equal attention to both
content
subject and the acquisition of English proficiency in speaking, reading
and
writing. In this course students will learn and be able to:
Use English to express their ideas
in social and academic interactions.
Display, interpret and analyze data
through matrices, graphs, histograms and charts.
Use variation equations and their
graphs to solve real-world problems.
Solve equations and inequalities
using different methods.
Write a linear equation given a recursion
routine,
graph or data.
Model real-world problems with linear
equations, inequalities
and systems of two inequalities.
Solve systems of linear equations using
substitution, elimination and matrix.
Through
this course students will gain experience making conjectures about data
set
then testing them with appropriate statistical and graphical methods.
Also,
they will develop their reasoning and problem-solving skills as well as
improve
ability to work with others on a mathematical problem.
.
This
course will cover 5 chapters of the Discovering Algebra book:
1. Data
Exploration
2. Proportional Reasoning and Variation
3. Linear Equations
4. Fitting a Line to Data
5. Systems of Equations and Inequalities
GRADING
POLICY:
Attendance and
participation
will constitute 20_% of your grade for this course. Each student is
given 10
points for Daily Participation or 50 points a week. Doing work for
other
classes or work not assigned to be done during class, sleeping, social
talking,
tardiness or leaving class early without an excuse are all
circumstances that
may result in loss of your daily participation points. Students will
receive no
participation points for days on which they have unexcused absences. Further, students may not be able to
make up missed work, tests, or quizzes for unexcused absences
To be able to pass the course, students need to participate in all assigned activities and get at least a D for final grade. The course will reflect the scale shown below.
